Princess Margaret Hospital ranks among the
top centres in the world for bone marrow transplantation, and has achieved a solid international reputation for having some of the longest surviving bone marrow transplant recipients in the world.
-
Princess Margaret Hospital houses
Canada's largest inpatient leukemia program and the country's largest blood and marrow transplant program and treats the largest number of patients with leukemia in Canada.
-
Canada's first bone marrow transplant program was developed and housed at Princess Margaret Hospital and was made possible because researchers at Princess Margaret Hospital discovered that all blood-forming cells originate from a single hemopoietic stem cell found in bone marrow. From that discovery have come several advances in the treatment of a variety of blood-related disorders.
-
Researchers recently discovered specific genetic alterations that predict how well leukemia patients will respond to treatment. The findings could influence how doctors choose to treat a patient's cancer and whether or not they prescribe the standard treatment or use a more aggressive approach.
-
Through research, physicians will be able to more accurately predict who will benefit from the procedure and how to control rejection of donor bone marrow with the fewest side effects.
